Astro’s Playroom Guide

Trophies are another kind of collectible that are available in every PlayStation 5 game (as well as the PS4, PS3 and PSVita). They aren’t tracked internally in the game, but are instead tracked externally by the system itself. Later in the level you’ll be in a frog robot suit equipped with a spring on the bottom of it. By holding the R2 trigger down you’ll press that spring down to jump and as you are doing it you feel the resistance in the trigger.

There are a few areas where specific weapons like bows and arrows can be used to shoot explosive barrels, a clever way to get the player used to the new norm of adaptive triggers. Astro’s Playroom is a technical demo and free platforming game bundled with every PlayStation 5, and the gaming community could not get enough of its cutesy art style and homage to the brand’s history. Japan Studio wanted to give early users a taste of the hardware’s capabilities and showcase the improvements of the DualSense controller to give them a definitive next-gen experience. In the PS1 at the start of the level, there’s a memory card with “Ken’s” written on it. This is a reference to Ken Kutaragi, the father of the PlayStation.

I went into this game expecting it to be nothing more than a quick tech demo, I was very wrong. What I was meet with was a platformer where you played as a charming little robot in a world that has a better art style then most modern games. Astro’s Playroom is the perfect game to play first to kick off the PlayStation 5 generation. It’s a fluid and fun 3D platformer sure, but it being built around showing off what the DualSense controller can add to gaming Is what really starts to make it special.

This fellow was in the Dinosaur Tech demo to show the power of the PlayStation at rendering a single character. The T. Rex makes many other appearances in Astro’s Playroom, including the Dreams reference in Renderforest and some of the screens in the PlayStation Labo area. Yet another unlockable display for the Labo area is a Bot throwing a blue boomerang around. The shape is a reference to the infamous “Boomerang” prototype controller, an unofficial name for the controller that was shown alongside the PlayStation 3 when it debuted. The controller would be dropped in favour of the more familiar DualShock design.

To add the four bots to Astro Bot, play until you’ve completed the first nebula and unlocked the Crash Site hub. Here, you can continue to unlock additional collectibles, including puzzle pieces and bots to add to your totals. What’s so remarkable about Astro’s Playroom is that while it’s ostensibly about showing off the features of the PlayStation 5, it’s also a fabulous platformer. Levels constantly throw me new toys to play with that totally change the way the level plays. Later levels include a spaceship (with rockets powered by the adaptive triggers) and a rolling ball (controlled by swiping the touchpad on the DualSense), intermingled with platforming sequences.

They act and are defeated in exactly the same way, which seems like the act of a hopelessly uninspired wannabe, which is the exact opposite impression you get from every other aspect of the game. Don’t worry, there’s no fall damage, so Astro can survive the landing just fine. The Astro franchise is built upon the success of the PlayStation brand and became the de facto mascot. Throughout the worlds of Astro’s Playroom, you’ll encounter small animals like Rabbits, Squirrels, Crabs and even Toucans.

The first two hits on an animal will give you one Coin each, which the third will give you five, for a total of seven! Another unlockable display for the Labo area are some canisters with white logos in them. These are the icons for the Xross Media Bar, which debuted on the 2003 PSX console in Japan, but is more known for its use on the PSP, PS3 and on Bravia TVs. The logos are still in use today, with the exception of the old PSN logo.

A full-length sequel, Astro Bot, was announced on May 30, 2024, and was released for the PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2024. Puzzle Piece 2/4 – After the second red button where you then jump up the two metal sloped platforms, this puzzle piece is in the top left corner of the area before hitting the third red button. You’ll have to jump back to the left to it from the wooden platform on the right. The DualSense Wireless Controller is PlayStation’s most feature-filled controller. Removing only the light bar and renaming the Share Button to the Create Button, it features new haptic feedback motors in the handles for much more precise vibrations. The triggers were redesigned into “adaptive” triggers that provide force feedback during gameplay. You also find a monkey suit for climbing and a fun nod to Marble Madness that must have been suggested by, or intended as homage to, PlayStation 5 architect Mark Cerny who created the original game.

The Bot with the staff is the Maiden in Black, a demon who uses souls collected by the player character to help them level up in the Nexus. Demon’s Souls got a PS5 remake in 2020 for the launch of the console. In the second pink field area you’ll find a large rabbit-like robot jumping over the play area. It holds the Guiness World Record as the first platform video game in true 3D, beating out Super Mario 64 by an entire year. Coin collection in Astro Playroom is straightforward but requires attention to detail. Revisit levels after completing the story to find missed coins; Break objects like crates and ice blocks to reveal additional coins.

Astro’s Playroom is a fantastic tech demo game that showcases the capabilities of the DualSense controller. The haptic feedback, motion sensor, and adaptive triggers make a significant difference, and the game successfully demonstrates these features. The game itself is enjoyable, featuring four distinct levels that offer unique gameplay experiences. Players can glide into the air, transform into a cannonball and roll their way to the finish line, become a robot monkey, and do some mountain climbing. Additionally, players can transform into a robot frog, allowing them to jump into action. Astro’s Playroom also includes collectibles that represent the history of PlayStation, spanning from the PS1 era to the PS5 era.

Players must master the game’s mechanics and explore optimized routes to succeed. Patience and practice are key‚ as these achievements are designed to test even the most experienced players’ abilities. Use guides and tips to streamline your progress and conquer these demanding challenges. Kids say that the game is a delightful and fun platformer that appeals to all ages, particularly praising its nostalgic references and enjoyable gameplay. While some older players feel it’s not suitable for anyone under 30, many believe it is perfect for kids, highlighting its approachable difficulty and excellent haptic feedback.

In the final shaded section of the level with the long wooden bridge, look down on the left-hand wall to see a Bot on a bike escaping a swarm of Bots. The Bots chasing the bike refer to the huge swarms of zombies featured in the game. Further along the area where the Horizon and Dreams easter eggs are will be some vines you can move by blowing into your microphone. Inside the cave on the right is a coffin, which if you punch will cause a blonde figure to emerge and pull the lid back on.
